Our Philosophy & Curriculum

Practical Life

Practical Life includes life skills to help develop independence, coordination,
concentration, self-control, self-awareness,
conﬁdence and include:

Care of Self (food preparation, dressing, washing),
Care of Environment (cleaning, gardening, care of pets, environmentalism),
Grace and Courtesy (greetings, manners, social interactions),
Control of Movement (reﬁning movements, walking the line, moving quietly).

Sensorial Activities

Sensorial Activities allows the child to reﬁne each of their senses:

Sight (visual),
Touch (tactile),
Smell (olfactory),
Taste (gustatory)
Sound (auditory)
Stereognostic (kinaesthetic).
Includes the manipulation of speciﬁcally designed materials that isolate qualities. Reﬁnes ﬁne motor skills, visual and auditory senses and develops coordination and the ability to order and
classify. Materials include Pink Tower, Brown Stairs, Knobbed Cylinders, Colour
Tablets.

Language

Language is based on phonetic awareness. Children work through speciﬁc hands-on and
tactile language materials such as the sandpaper letters to the moveable alphabet. Language is not an isolated topic but runs through the curriculum. The spoken language is the foundation for writing and then reading.

Mathematics

Mathematics is developed with the use of concrete learning materials. The sensorial area is the preparation for mathematics. Hands-on materials are used such as number rods, sandpaper numbers, number boards, spindle box, number tiles, beads, and games. Each exercise builds upon another and the child gradually moves to from concrete to abstract areas such as place value, addition, subtraction, multiplication, and fractions.

Culture

Culture allows the child to explore the natural world around them and includes:

Geography (continents, landforms, earth layers, solar system),
Zoology (classiﬁcation, physiology of animals),
Botany (ecology, classiﬁcation, physiology of plants),
History (time lines, using a calendar),
Science.
Art and music could be considered cultural activities, however, creativity is encouraged across all curriculum areas. The cultural area is clearly identiﬁable by globes, puzzle maps, ﬂags and perhaps images or materials from other cultures.

At COCONUT Playschool, we foster an environment following Montessori principles
in which your child explores his own interests and allow him to develop at his own pace. Rather than providing instructed class lessons to all children at the same time (as is done in a traditional school setting) our teachers guide each student on a one-on-one basis, supporting each and every child on their own learning path.

We pride ourselves on providing a homely and nurturing environment – where your child will feel safe and happy and enjoy their ﬁrst experience of school.

Our COCONUT Playschool is open 24-months to 6 years olds offering both daytime and after school activities by fun, caring, loving and experienced teachers and staff

Chewy

This is a period of psycho-development. They are increasingly active and curious, explores the environment further. in this world, they sing songs, create rhythms, listen to stories, make friends, exercise practical life, coloring and painting as basis for further exploration. The program cultivates four major areas that help prepare the child for life : Concentration, Order, Primary Motor and Coordination.

Nuts

Through the use of unique Montessori materials & method, children learn by associating abstract concepts with a myriad of sensorial experiences. Hands and eyes work together, doing and manipulating, rather than simply observing, children begin to develop concentration, attention to details and social-development while working towards completion of tasks.
